Virtual Workshop:

The Sexually Well-Informed Clinician: Principles & Practices of Sex Therapy

Ian Kerner, PhD, LMFT

10 Fridays: September 22, 29, October 6, 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17, December 1, 8, 15* & 22*, 2023 from 9:30AM-11:30AM on Zoom

20 NYS and AASECT CE Credits
*This is a 10 week-course with two extra dates reserved at the end in case of a class cancellation.

Sexuality and its expression are central to life, yet it’s not uncommon for both client and therapist to collude in avoiding sex-related issues due to mutual discomfort. In an effort to bridge this gap and give clinicians the working tools to integrate sex therapy into their practices, this 10 week workshop will highlight:

  • The history of sex therapy and the exponentially expanding science of sexuality
  • Current tools for assessment, case-formulation and treatment of common sexual issues through a range of different lenses (biological, psychological, relational, intersectional).
  • Therapeutic interventions, including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, psychoeducational, and pharmacological approaches.
  • Co-constructing homework assignments with patients that maintain the clinical thread in-between sessions and bring back useful data to keep working with.
  • Challenging and deconstructing the limiting beliefs that patients often hold around sex.
  • In this 10-week workshop, you will learn how to:

    • Connect with your clients around “hard to talk about” sex topics
    • Integrate tools for intervening in common issues such as low desire, mismatched libido, arousal and orgasm problems and excessive porn use amongst others
    • Apply the latest research on spontaneous vs. responsive desire, arousal non-concordance, the dual-control model, core erotic themes and more

Throughout the course, we will be paying close attention to the development and deepening of the therapeutic alliance and the processing of clinical material that happens both in the room and in between sessions through homework assignments. Case studies will be regularly referenced and discussed.

    Summer Sexuality Series:

The Incredible Lightness of Becoming Erotic in Later Life:
    Lessons from Octogenarians

    with Suzanne Iasenza, PhD

    Wednesdays, June 7, 14, 21 & 28, 2023; 1:45-3:15pm EST on Zoom

6 AASECT + 6 NYS CE credits available.

NOTE: This is a 4-part series, registration is closed.

U.S. Culture contains a plethora of desexualizing narratives about aging. Therapists and patients often buy into myths believing sex in later life is destined to be limited and disappointing. After years of substandard or non-existent sex in long-term relationships some seniors enter couple therapy feeling hopeless and skeptical that erotic life is possible especially as they experience the physical impact of aging.

This presentation will discuss how to identify and transform limiting cultural and personal narratives, thus creating potential erotic space within which couples discover erotic lightness and play. Case material will illustrate how to integrate new narrative frames and technique into therapy with senior couples.

    About the Presenter:
SUZANNE IASENZA, PhD is on the faculties of the Adelphi University Derner Institute’s Postgraduate Program in Psychoanalysis, and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP), where she also serves as Co-Director of the Sex Therapy Training Program (STP). She also teaches at the Ackerman Institute for the Family, the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and the Family Institute of Westchester. She maintains a private practice in psychotherapy and sex therapy in New York. Her latest book, Transforming Sexual Narratives: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy was published by Routledge.

Registration has now closed. If you registered but haven’t received your Zoom link, please email Tobin Berliner at stp@icpnyc.org
