SCHOLARSHIPS AND TUITION ASSISTANCE

The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is proud to offer BIPOC scholarships to support the education and professional development of individuals from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. Our BIPOC scholarships are instrumental in advancing diversity within the mental health profession by offering specialized training to individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. This initiative not only addresses the shortage of BIPOC therapists but also enhances the likelihood that patients can access professionals who share their ethnic and cultural backgrounds, promoting a more inclusive and comfortable therapeutic experience. ICP recognizes that Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access (IDEA) are central to its mission.

Scholarships

In accordance with ICP’s values to increase diversity and financial accessibility, we are proud to offer full-tuition scholarships for BIPOC individuals interested in our training programs.

ICP has established scholarships in five of our training programs that are named in honor of current and past Psychoanalysts, Psychologists, Educators and Leaders of Color who have been instrumental in impacting the healthcare and mental health fields. ICP anticipates scholarships will continue to be awarded over many years to come.

Application Criteria*:

Identify as a person of color
Hold graduate degree in a licensable mental health field, along with a NYS license or the ability to apply for a limited permit
Provide a current resume or CV
Provide two letters of recommendation that document a commitment to this field of study
Provide a personal statement that includes a description of your commitment to pursuing this field of study, future career goals for utilizing knowledge and skills gained in this program, and how this scholarship award impact career goals

Joycelyn Elders Honorary Scholarship

Division: Sex Therapy Program (STP)

ICP is committed to the education and training of future sexuality practitioners, awards a yearly scholarship to encourage and nurture diversity within our Sex Therapy Program and the field of sex therapy. This scholarship is named for Dr. Joycelyn Elders who, in 1993, became the first woman and the first black U.S. Surgeon General. Dr. Elders used her national platform to tirelessly promote sex education. In her name, our scholarship is for those who are traditionally underrepresented in the field of sex therapy.

Please note that our Sex Therapy certificate program is a two-year program. The scholarship covers two years of tuition and the expectation is that scholars in good standing will complete the full program.

E. Kitch Childs Scholarship

Division: Family and Couples Treatment and Training Service (FACTS)

The scholarship in honor of E. Kitch Childs, a prominent clinical psychologist, feminist, and lesbian activist expresses our commitment to the education and training of future non-white couples and family therapists. It will be given yearly to encourage and nurture diversity within the Family and Couples division of ICP and is intended as a progressive contribution to the overall field of couples and family therapy.

Dr. Kitch Childs was part of the group that, in 1969, founded the Association for Women in Psychology and in 1972 was one of the first Black women to earn a doctorate from the University of Chicago. She was a staunch advocate for the protection and support of minority women, battered women, people with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, and other disenfranchised persons.

Please note that our Family and Couples Treatment Services certificate program is a two-year program. The scholarship covers two years of tuition, and the expectation is that scholars in good standing will complete the full program.

Dr. Margaret Lawrence Scholarship

Division: Psychoanalytic Training Program

In honor of Dr. Margaret Lawrence, this scholarship provides full tuition and supervision for the full four years of this program for scholars in good standing. This deeply enriching program leads to a certificate to practice as a psychoanalyst, or for NYS certification as a licensed psychoanalyst.

Please note that our Psychoanalytic training program is a four-year program. The scholarship covers all four years of tuition plus supervision costs, and the expectation is that scholars in good standing will complete the full program.

Dr. Annie Lee Jones Scholarship

Division: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program

In honor of Dr. Annie Lee Jones, this scholarship provides tuition for the full two years of this program for scholars in good standing.

Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark Scholarship

Division: Trauma Studies Center

ICP is committed to investing in the future of the field of trauma therapy, and welcomes clinicians from the global majority. Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark were a married team, whose work contributed to the ruling of the Supreme Court in Brown vs Board of Education. It is most fitting that in honor of Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark, this scholarship provides tuition for the full two years of this program for a member of the global majority.
