TREATMENT
OPTIONS AT ICP

At the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP), we offer an extensive range of psychotherapeutic services tailored to meet your individual needs. Our commitment to delivering exceptional care at affordable rates sets us apart. With a diverse group of skilled therapists we strive to mirror the vibrant tapestry of New York, we strive to ensure your therapeutic journey is both enriching and transformative.

Navigating the Therapeutic Dialogue

Our psychoanalytic or psychodynamic treatment approach revolves around a collaborative dialogue between therapist and patient. This dialogue serves as a conduit to explore the root causes of challenges and symptoms, fostering personal growth, emotional healing, and enhanced well-being.

Embarking on Your Healing Path

Initiating treatment at ICP is a seamless process. Your journey begins with a brief phone conversation with an intake coordinator, who assesses the alignment of our services with your needs. Following this, if services at ICP seem like the most beneficial option, an appointment is scheduled with an intake therapist, either in-person or virtually. Our intake therapists possess specialized training to compassionately gather information, allowing us to determine the optimal treatment approach in consultation with you.

Post-interview, ICP’s clinically trained patient assignment team assigns the best-fit therapist for your specific requirements and goals. However, it's important to note that at any step of the intake process, it may be determined that ICP is not able to provide the services that are needed. In such cases, we are committed to providing you with information for alternate treatment providers who will better meet your requirements or offer more beneficial services. ICP’s dedication to offering you superior care remains unwavering throughout this process.

Accessing Affordable Care

We are pleased to accept various in-network insurance plans, such as Oscar, GHI, Emblem, Emblem-Medicaid, HealthFirst, and HealthFirst-Medicaid. For those with out-of-network coverage, partial reimbursement is typically attainable. For individuals without insurance coverage, our fee structure is designed to be flexible and accommodating. We offer a sliding scale system, adjusting fees based on income to ensure accessibility for most people.
Our therapists celebrate the individuality of every client, respecting their unique life experiences and cultural backgrounds.

Diverse Range of Treatment Services

Discover our array of accessible treatment services, each designed to cater to distinct needs:

Adult Treatment

The Adult Treatment Service offers individual psychotherapy (1-2 times weekly), or intensive psychoanalytic treatment (3-5 times weekly); read more about psychoanalytic treatment below. Therapy may help with a range of problems-in-living that affect the way we think and feel. These include symptoms of anxiety, indecisiveness, guilt and shame; depression and low self-esteem; effects of abuse; flashback memories; and distress in work and relationships. Our therapists celebrate the individuality of every client, respecting their unique life experiences and cultural backgrounds.

Psychoanalytic Treatment

In offering Psychoanalytic treatment we provide a service to help broaden perspectives about the roots of our difficulties. We ask what makes us repeat things, despite having worked on them before? In these extraordinary and chaotic times, our coping skills and relationships are challenged for unconscious as well as conscious reasons. We often feel, lost, troubled or dissatisfied with our lives, and difficulty with relationships and self-expression – despite our other achievements. In wanting to change our direction and heal painful feelings, we often need to work on underlying obstacles that go beyond problem solving. Psychoanalysis considers the whole person: our conscious and unconscious experience, within ourselves and within our socio-cultural environment. Psychoanalysis is a therapeutic process, but one that is deeper. It is designed to explore our complex emotions, motivation and obstacles to emotional freedom and to promote change. Often we find intricate ways to hide, even from ourselves. In analysis, with the right person, we try to discover the hidden things that are getting in our way of achieving the potential for a better life.

Time is needed to create the space for the work to unfold. Psychoanalytic treatment involves multiple sessions per week (two to three) for a minimum of at least two years. We strive to make this financially accessible to all considering psychoanalytic treatment, particularly those from communities which have been underserved and/or lack sufficient access to psychoanalytic treatment.

Trauma Treatment

Experience the Trauma Studies Center's transformative approach to healing from overwhelming life experiences. Through ICP’s Adult Treatment Clinic, the Trauma Studies Center offers treatment to individuals who suffer the consequences of childhood and adult experiences so overwhelming that their capacity to lead full and rich lives is compromised.

Some of the indications that one may be a trauma survivor include anxiety, indecisiveness, excessive guilt and shame, depression and low self-esteem, flashback memories, and instability in work and relationships.

Sex Therapy

Sex therapy at ICP is often short-term and focused on improving communication and solving problems in an atmosphere of confidentiality, empathy, safety and thoughtful reflection. Sex therapy can be structured as an adjunct to your current therapy. To that end, your ICP sex therapist will be happy to communicate with your primary therapist on an overall treatment plan that will not conflict with, but rather will enhance, your current therapy. We welcome all sexual orientations and take a sex-positive stance. ICP therapists use a multi-layered, biopsychosocial approach to exploring sexual issues, and our therapeutic approach is both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral. Although sexual problems are quite common sex is often a difficult topic to discuss.

Sex therapists at ICP are trained to work with both individuals and couples on common sexual challenges such as:
  • Lack of sexual interest, low desire, sexual incompatibility.
  • Premature ejaculation, erectile disorder, delayed ejaculation
  • Painful sex, inhibited arousal, orgasm issues

FAQs - Process

1. What are your therapists’ qualifications?
Our therapists have academic degrees or are in process of earning degrees in social work, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, creative arts therapy and psychology. We also have analytic candidates with master’s degrees in other fields who are training to become licensed psychoanalysts. All are currently enrolled or have graduated from our specialized and advanced post-graduate training programs. All therapists at ICP are assigned a clinical supervisor who they meet with weekly to ensure the highest quality of care for our patients.
2. What type of therapy and/or counseling do you provide?
ICP does not adhere to one specific theory, but our core philosophy and approaches are relational psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Other modalities and approaches are utilized to best fit the patient’s needs.
3. Is everything confidential?
Yes, all patient files are stored electronically in a HIPAA compliant cloud based medical records platform. We are bound by the laws of confidentiality and HIPAA.
4. I heard that there are therapists in training. Please explain this to me.
Many of our therapists have decided to come to ICP for additional advanced and specialized training above and beyond their professional degree in a mental health field. Some therapists have masters degrees in other fields of study and come to ICP to become licensed psychoanalysts. They attend classes at ICP to receive specific training in analysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy, eating disorders, trauma, LGBTQ issues, family and couples treatment and sex therapy. Some of our therapists are in their advanced year of graduate school and are carefully chosen to participate in ICP’s internship program. All work closely with a clinical supervisor.
5. Do I have to have a therapist in training?
No, but the majority of our therapists are in training, and requesting a post-graduate therapist may cause a delay in your treatment. Many of the therapists who are in training have quite a bit of experience, and are taking courses at ICP to deepen their knowledge.
6. What areas of expertise do you offer?
We have therapists specifically trained to help most people in emotional or psychological distress, including but not limited to: depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, disordered eating and eating disorders, other specific mental illnesses, coping with medical issues and chronic illness including HIV- and AIDS-related issues, family and couples treatment, grief and loss, relationship issues, intimacy issues, LGBTQ issues, parenthood, divorce and separation and other life challenges. Please note that this list is not exhaustive; we have many therapists at ICP with a wide-range of specialties.
7. Can you get medication and therapy?
ICP does not offer psychiatry but our therapists can help refer you to a psychiatrist or psychopharmacologist if desired or deemed necessary. Your therapist at ICP will have regular communication with your psychiatrist or psychopharmacologist.

FAQs - Insurance

1. What kind of insurance does ICP take?
We accept the following in-network insurance: Oscar, GHI, Emblem, Emblem-Medicaid, HealthFirst, HealthFirst-Medicaid. If there is a lapse in insurance or your insurance terminates you will be charged for your sessions based on your income. It is a patient’s responsibility to alert ICP to a lapse in coverage.
2. Do you accept Medicaid?
We accept Emblem and Healthfirst Medicaid plans only. We are not authorized to accept Medicaid plans from any other provider.
3. What happens if my insurance doesn't cover treatment at ICP?
We work on a sliding scale and establish a fee based on your income. A patient’s fee may increase or decrease based on changes in income over time. Patients whose insurance lapses or terminates will be assigned a fee for any past unpaid sessions and sessions going forward based on the sliding fee scale.
4. What happens if I do not have insurance when I begin treatment, and then I get insurance in the middle of my treatment?
We can start using your insurance from the moment the coverage is effective. Please make sure to alert your therapist when you receive coverage so that ICP may verify your benefits so that you can begin to use your coverage.
5. Do you accept Medicare?
We are not Medicare providers.
6. How do I get reimbursed for out-of-network benefits?
We will give you a monthly statement that you submit to your insurance company just like you would for any doctor bill.
7. Is the intake covered by insurance?
The intake is usually considered an initial evaluation and is covered by insurance.
8. What information do you provide to insurance companies?
ICP submits claims to your insurance company in order to receive payment for the therapy sessions provided. Claims include your demographic information and the dates of the sessions. No other information is provided to the insurance company unless it is requested by them for a random audit. Insurance companies are entitled to audit medical records from any medical or mental health provider that they are contracted with and they are bound by the same HIPAA laws of confidentiality as doctors and therapists. On rare occasions, managed care companies require more information to justify paying for additional sessions, but you will be a part of this process.
